Garbage Disposal Repair

Sometimes even the best disposals need repairing. If your disposal is leaking or stopped working, you need a licensed and experienced plumber to help. Williams Plumbing has the right specialist to send your way.

How Long Does a Garbage Disposal Last?

The typical garbage disposal lasts 8 to 10 years. Newer and heavy duty models usually last 15+ years before the motor burns up and the blades start to dull.

What Size Garbage Disposal Do I Need?

Garbage disposals are measured in horse-power (how big the motor is) and grinding stages (how many sets of grinding blades). While garbage disposal size is usually based on the number of people living in a house, the amount and type of cooking a family does should also be a factor when selecting a size.

Sizes of Garbage Disposals available:

  • 1/3 Horse Power:
Perfect for a small studio apartment, where cooking is a kept to minimum.
  • 1/2 Horse Power:
Often found in small homes and apartments. A 1/2 HP garbage disposal is usually single stage and great for leftovers and small fruit and vegetable peels. If you do a lot of cooking and have to often reset your garbage disposal or are experiencing a slow-moving kitchen drain, consider upgrading to a 3/4 HP model.
  • 3/4 Horse Power:
3/4 HP models come in two types:
    • Single stage: Great for leftovers and food peels, but should not be used for chicken bones, starchy or stringy vegetables like potatoes or celery
    • Multistage: Great for healthy families. Multistage 3/4 HP garbage disposers can handle soft peels like banana, full chuck of starchy vegetables like potatoes, and small chicken bones.
  • 1 Horse Power:
Perfect for the home chef. With two or more stages of cutting blades, full corn cobs, artichoke hearts, and fruit pits can be safely disposed of down the drain.
